What is Gonorrhoea?
Gonorrhoea is a sexually transmitted disease (STD). You get it from having sex with someone who is infected with it. Gonorrhoea usually causes pain and other symptoms in your genital tract, but it can also cause problems in your rectum, throat, eyes, or joints. Both men and women can get it, though men get it more often than women.
Causes of Gonorrhoea
This STD comes from a bacterium called Neisseria gonorrhoeae. Even though it’s spread through sex, a man doesn’t have to ejaculate in order to pass it on to his partner.
You can get gonorrhoea from any kind of sexual contact, including:
1. Vaginal intercourse
2. Anal intercourse
3. Oral intercourse (both giving and receiving)
As with other germs, you can get the bacterium that causes gonorrhoea just from touching an infected area on another person. If you come into contact with the penis, vagina, mouth, or anus of someone carrying this bacterium, you can get gonorrhoea.
These germs can’t live for more than a few seconds outside the body, so you can’t get this STD by touching objects like toilet seats or clothes. But women who have gonorrhoea can pass the disease on to their baby during vaginal delivery.
Symptoms of gonorrhoea in men
The first noticeable symptom in men is often a burning or painful sensation during urination. As it progresses, other symptoms may include:
a. Greater frequency or urgency of urination.
b. Discharge (or drip) from the penis (white, yellow, or greenish).
c. Swelling or redness at the opening of the penis.
d. Swelling or pain in the testicles.
Symptoms in women
Gonorrhoea infections can appear much like common vaginal yeast or bacterial infections.
Symptoms include:
a. Discharge from the vagina (watery, creamy, or slightly green).
b. Pain or burning sensation while urinating.
c. The need to urinate more frequently.
d. Heavier periods or spotting.
e. Pain upon engaging in sexual intercourse.
f. Sharp pain in the lower abdomen.
f. Fever.

What is Syphilis?
Syphilis is a s*xually transmitted infection caused by the bacteria Treponema pallidum.
How is it Transmitted?
You can catch syphilis through oral, vaginal or anal s*x with a person who has syphilis. It is transmitted through skin-to-skin contact with an infected area. The chance of catching syphilis is greatly reduced by using condoms during sex. Condoms also protect you against other s*xually transmissible infections. Syphilis is highly contagious when a sore or rash is present. More rarely, syphilis is transmitted from mother to baby during pregnancy.
What are the Signs and Symptoms?
Not all people with syphilis have symptoms so you may not know you have it unless you have a blood test for it. There are 3 stages of infection known as primary, secondary and latent syphilis. The symptoms vary according to the stage. People with primary or secondary syphilis are infectious to their s*xual partners.
Primary Syphilis
A hard, painless sore occurs usually on the genitals but it may be at other sites of s*xual contact such as the mouth or anus. Because it is typically painless and may occur in hidden sites (e.g cervix or mouth) you may not notice it. The sore or ulcer usually appears 3-4 weeks after infection. However, it can occur 10 to 90 days after infection which may make it difficult to know when you caught syphilis. The sore usually heals by itself within about 4 weeks. Even though the sore heals, if you have not had treatment, you still have it.
Secondary Syphilis
During the secondary stage, skin rashes and/or sores in the mouth, v*gina, or anus (also called mucous membrane lesions) may occur. This stage usually starts with a rash on one or more areas of the body. The rash can show up when a primary sore is healing or several weeks after the sore has healed. The rash can look like rough, red, or reddish-brown spots on the palms of the hands and/or the bottoms of the feet. The rash usually will not itch and it is sometimes so faint that it will not be noticed. Other symptoms may include fever, swollen lymph glands (also called lymph nodes, groups of cells that help to fight infection), sore throat, patchy hair loss, headaches, weight loss, muscle aches, and fatigue (feeling very tired). The symptoms from this stage will go away whether or not a person receives treatment. Without the right treatment, the infection will move to the latent and possibly late stages of syphilis.
Latent or Late Syphilis
The latent stage of syphilis begins when all of the earlier symptoms disappear. Without treatment, a person can continue to have syphilis in their body for years without any signs or symptoms. Most people with untreated syphilis do not develop late-stage syphilis. However, when it does happen, it is very serious and occurs roughly 10-30 years after the infection begins. Symptoms of the late stage of syphilis include difficulty coordinating muscle movements, paralysis (not able to move certain parts of your body), numbness, blindness, and dementia (mental disorder). In the late stages of syphilis, the disease damages internal organs and can result in death.
